66 Songs and Ballads
2 In eighteen eighty-eight,
When the flowers were a brilliant hue, I left my native country My fortune to pursue.
3 When I landed in New Brunswick,
In that lumbering counteree, I hired to work in the lumber woods, Which proved my destiny.
4
Whilst loading two sleds from the yard, I received my deathly wound.
5 There is danger in the ocean,
When the seas roll mountain high; There is danger on the battlefield, Where the angry bullets fly;
6 There is danger in the lumber woods
And death lies solemn there, And I have fallen a victim Unto my monster snare.
7 Here's adieu l unto my father
T is him who drove me here; I could not put up with him, His treatment drove me here.
1 The expression "Here's adieu, etc." is always sung as if it were "Here's a due against my father," and appears to be conceived as a curse upon the father. It is sung very sternly. |
